Writer's Block: Clock Punching

What was your first job?

View 551 Answers

My first job was one that I shared with my twin sister while in highschool, though technically I was the only one on payroll.
We would take turns coming into a health food store and sandwich shop to do basic cleaning, and prep some things for the next day like cutting veggies for soup stock, etc.
We got this job because the owners knew us as we had been coming in with our mom since we were 6.

Basically, we came in one day to shop and they were like "How would you like an after school job 4 days a week?"
And we were like "Sure!"
And they were like "You're hired!"
And we were like "Both of us?"
And they were like "Just as long as someone is here, we don't care how you sort it out."
And we were like "Rad!"
And they were like "Fabulous! You start Monday!"
And we were like "Sweet! First job! *highfive!*

And that's how it happened.

Writer's Block: And the Apple Goes To

Who is/was your favorite teacher in school?

View 516 Answers

Mr. Schilling, 3rd Grade Teacher

Mr. Schilling was an unconventional teacher.

  • He didn't have a desk, he had an ironing board and a barstool.
  • He introduced me to Rock Paper Scissors, a popular method of decision making, tie-breaking, etc. in class.
  • If you got 100 percent on mid week spelling test, you got to verbally give the final test. (If more than one got 100%, winner chosen by rock-paper scissors)
  • When verbally giving the rest of the class the test, you did so with a set of plush antlers on your head. You were also exempt from that final test.
  • He would inspire creative writing stories in the weirdest ways. Famous story topics were rat pie (including simulating rat pie by baking chicken pot pies in class, and hiding the packages), cockroaches who stole his razor (he grew out his bear a little and blamed it on roackes), and warts (he had us make clay warts with boars har brush bristles sticking out)
  • Good answers, scores, behavior etc. earned tickets, which were entered into a drawing for prizes. Often just candy and toys and whatnot, but people loved it.
  • He got a new truck, and when leading the class out to recess, we were led to the parking lot to all declair in unison "baaaaadd truck!" (because bad meant cool back then)
  • He introduced me to a lot of music including Santana and Jerry Lee Lewis. Pretty much everything on the Stand By Me soundtrack reminds me of the third grade.
  • We got to grow mold in class.
  • We got to grow meal worms in class.
  • He taught us how to play Go
  • We got ot do some advanced science stuff in the GATE program, including some dissections. I was fascinated.
  • He spoke to us like we were smart and competent. I didn't feel like I was treated like a kid.

Writer's Block: Pick and Stick

If you could only eat one kind of cuisine—Mexican, Thai, French, Italian, Indian, Chinese, etc.—for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?

Italian

Contains the 5 basic food groups: Cheese, meat, pasta, olive oil, wine

I'd survive. In fact, now I'm suddenly hungry for some great food.

Writer's Block: Comic Instinct

Do you think animals have a sense of humor?

Submitted By [info]li_bean

::sings::
I don't want to start any blasphemous rumors
But my neighbor's dog's got a sick sense of humor
And when I nap I expect to hear him bark-ing

Seriously though, I don't think dogs just do things for attention, I think they do things for amusement and the fun of it all.

if they didn't have a good sense of humor, that whole throwing-the-tennis-ball-but-not-really-throwing-it would get old, and they'd get all bitter about it, if they didn't have a sense of humor.

And I think cats like to do things like barf in shoes, and then watch for a reaction. I'm sure they really get a kick out of it.

As for my turtles, they seem to just want food...

Writer's Block: Environmental Confession

'Fess up: What do you do that's bad for the environment?

Sponsored by One Million Acts of Green brought to you by Cisco.

I don't recycle at home. I used to, but couldn't find a decent way to do it without attracting bugs and spiders.
I eat meat, and I know cows far a lot, and that is bad for the environment.
Aside from that, I am not sure what else. I don't use much in the way of aerosols, I don't drive, in general I'm not wasteful with water or electricity. *shrug*

BTW, I know I don't post a lot, and when I do is it usually one of these. I plan on posting an actual post soon. I promise. :)

Writer's Block: I Can Relate

What fictional character do you most identify with?

View 506 Answers

I know I've grown up and slowed down a bit (it's kinda sad actually, and I aim to fight any further growing up or slowing down) since I originally identified with this character sometime between junior high and high school, but it's gotta be Tank Girl.

The comic, the movie, the music in the movie, the attitude, the style, the language... Hells Yeah!

I may not look very Tank Girl, but my inner punk rock girl still wears those combat boots I discarded years ago.

Writer's Block: Swine Times

Are you worried about catching the swine flu? Do you have a plan for avoiding contagion or dealing with quarantine?

View 501 Answers

As of July 2008, the population of California is 36,756,666 (according to Google, the trusted info source)

According to the CDC, # of laboratory confirmed cases in California is 14.

That is a very small percent. My calculator couldn't even give me a number for how small of a percent that is.

Sure, I'm a little concerned, as I ride a packed bus from Los Angeles to Santa Monica and back for over an hour every day.
Sure, the boyfriend did buy me facemasks in case it gets to a point where I should be wearing a facemask on the bus during my commute. He's being a good boyfriend. :)

But I'm going to stand by the immortal, friendly words printed on the cover of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy... Don't Panic

I went to the CVS this morning, mostly to buy candy for my desk, because people at work like it when I have candy at my desk. I remembered that we were out of hand sanitizer at home, which I usually keep close to the turtle tank because well, turtles poo, and when handling turtles you should have sanitizer handy when you're done.

No hand sanitizer ANYWHERE in the store. Not only was there no hand sanitizer ANYWHERE in the store, but there was a freaked out woman nearly crying on her cell phone in a sheer panic that there was NO hand sanitizer ANYWHERE in the store!!!!!~11!!~!!one!1!

My basket had an assortment of candy. I left the store with just that.

I understand concern, but panic, really, realized I can totally do without that.

Writer's Block: Celebrating Friendships

Over the past ten years, many friendships have started and/or been renewed on LiveJournal. Of your current LJ friends, who have you known the longest?

Technically, that would have to be [info]ditziechick but that's cause I've known her since the womb. :)

I'll have to give it some thought on the next runner up.

If you discovered a new planet, what would you name it?

Submitted By [info]thethicket

If it was Earth-like, I think it would be really hard to refrain from calling it Earth 2, Electric Boogaloo.

In all honesty, I'd have to go for something a little less flashy, like... Xanadu!

:)

Now back to your regularly scheduled Wednesday.

Writer's Block: Grab and Go

Scenario: For exactly 1 minute, you get access to all the databases of all the intelligence agencies in the world (CIA, FBI, KGB, MI-5, etc). What do you want to find out before time is up and you're caught and jailed forever?

View 503 Answers

Aliens.

I'd look up stuff on Roswell, Area 51, proof of aliens, any technology stolen from them, anything like that I'd love to get my hands on. Or, proof that aliens and reported encounters are faked, and reasons why the government perpetuates things about them.

1 minute is not a lot of time, but if if they were all searchable in Google-like fashion for that minute, I'm sure I could find out a lot.

The only other thing I'd want to know is whatever they tell a new president that instantly makes his hair start to go gray. It must be something intense. (I think it's aliens.)

Writer's Block: AKA

What's the story behind your username?

View 503 Answers

This is a very interesting question.

I'm not exactly sure what posessed me to choose this particular name, but I know that it took some thought.

It just sounded cute, and a bit naughty, and I only vaguely recall that some of the other choices that I wanted were already taken. I wanted something that was unique, no numbers or anything like that. Something fun, not just something generic or that vaguely described me.

Wow, it has been a long time since I've had to think about this.

I think something along the lines of "evil twin" inspired this too. Because ya know, there HAS to be an evil one. It's a moral imparative.

It's a moral imperative!

From Real Genius (1985, Val Kilmer)

Because sometimes... it just IS!

Also, I love quoting that movie.

Writer's Block: Half a Glass

Do you consider yourself an optimist, a pessimist, or a realist?

View 500 Answers

I think it is fairly safe to say that I'm an optimist. I've even been nicknamed "silver lining" on occaision, maybe even by a real live Nick. Go fig.

I think it is healthier to be an optimist. Stress, even if it only seems to be mental, is bad for your body. If your head is calm and you have a positive outlook your body isn't going to produce hormones to cause havoc. Even if that explanation, derived from something I read a while back, is total BS, I like to think there's something about it... See.. Optimisim. :)

I also find it difficult to not find some good even in bad things. I think it makes me a good judge of character, but I also tend to overlook faults in people that I should likely be more wary of. I try not to worry about such things though. :)

Many beloved television shows are no longer with us, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Six Feet Under, and Mystery Science Theater 3000. What defunct television show do you miss the most?

Basck in the day I loved My Secret Identity, Misfits of Science, Parker Lewis Can't Lose. I dug Greatest American Hero and Mork and Mindy when I was way younger.

More recently, missing Dead Like Me, Deadwood, John From Cincinati (I wanna know what the fuck that was all about), and Carnivale

Future defunct favorites: Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone

Writer's Block: The Eternal Nocturnal Struggle

Vampires or werewolves?

View 502 Answers

Wow. This is a tough one... If we're talking traditional plain werewolves and traiditional, lycanthropic werewolves, I'd have to go with vampires.

Now, if we're going with White Wolf, old World of Darkness, I'd have to say Werewolves.

New World of Darkness... the jury is still out on that one. :)
