Writer's Block: Swine Times

Are you worried about catching the swine flu? Do you have a plan for avoiding contagion or dealing with quarantine?

As of July 2008, the population of California is 36,756,666 (according to Google, the trusted info source)

According to the CDC, # of laboratory confirmed cases in California is 14.

That is a very small percent. My calculator couldn't even give me a number for how small of a percent that is.

Sure, I'm a little concerned, as I ride a packed bus from Los Angeles to Santa Monica and back for over an hour every day.
Sure, the boyfriend did buy me facemasks in case it gets to a point where I should be wearing a facemask on the bus during my commute. He's being a good boyfriend. :)

But I'm going to stand by the immortal, friendly words printed on the cover of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy... Don't Panic

I went to the CVS this morning, mostly to buy candy for my desk, because people at work like it when I have candy at my desk. I remembered that we were out of hand sanitizer at home, which I usually keep close to the turtle tank because well, turtles poo, and when handling turtles you should have sanitizer handy when you're done.

No hand sanitizer ANYWHERE in the store. Not only was there no hand sanitizer ANYWHERE in the store, but there was a freaked out woman nearly crying on her cell phone in a sheer panic that there was NO hand sanitizer ANYWHERE in the store!!!!!~11!!~!!one!1!

My basket had an assortment of candy. I left the store with just that.

I understand concern, but panic, really, realized I can totally do without that.

Yeah, our store is totally cleaned out except for the pen-size sprays. It's fucking crazy.

Swine flu should bring up the company's profits a fair bit.

I bought a high-quality mask at a military surplus store last week. This was before the outbreak, and I bought it for when I change the litter box, but now I'm feeling a little smug. Even though I still haven't taken it out of the package.

Now that I think about it, maybe I should ebay it. I'm sure I can get a lot more than the $5 I paid.

It's not airborne, yet, so washing hands a lot and avoiding anti bacterial soap as always should be enough of a precaution for the time being.

If it starts causing people to eat brains, then you might want to be concerned. ;-)

I hear different opinions about this...

Why avoid anti-bacterial soap? I know that flu is a virus and not bacterial but wouldn't you want the extra protection?

Studies have proven that regular soap gets you just as clean as antibacterial soap. All the antibacterial soap does is cull the bacteria herds and make them stronger. It's more of a general lifestyle change rather than related directly to the virus formerly known as swine flu.

The news says there are 3 cases at the school down the street from my house, it makes me feel pretty ooky.
Lots of hand washing.
No hanging out at St. Mels.
Vitamins
Lots of water

Not much else to do besides hibernate until it goes away, but then there is always something.

However so far the only deaths have been the ones in Mexico. So either the strain has already mutated to something less potent by time it got out; or people in Mexico are already in an unhealthy enough environment that they can't fight it as well.
